I came across this sampler during a visit with an antique dealer that specializes in 18th and 19th century Americana. My initial attraction to this marking sampler was the use of dark navy blue thread color. As you may know, blue is my favorite color and finding a miniature sampler in this color proved that it was meant for my collection.
During my research on this relic, I was able to find some history about the stitcher, Zeresh Andrus, but her genealogy had missing elements. Andrus was born on June 18, 1764 in Southington, Hartford, Connecticut. Her parents were Josiah and Rebekah Andrus. She was one of eight children, the second daughter. As with all of my reproduction samplers, I provide an informative letter with this sampler.
Zeresh Andrus’s marking sampler measures 6 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches and was stitched in silk. I feel that any stitcher can make this sampler their own by simply changing the color or size, but always remember that every stitch has a mark in time.
