I have recently started reproducing antique samplers. I love the idea of preserving beautiful needlework and sometimes “reimagining” these masterpieces. When I started reproducing samplers, I realized not all samplers have aged as well as others. These samplers are beautiful, but found that the damage to some of these pieces have left a lot to the imagination. So what did I decide to do? Reimagine them, of course.
When Flowers Bloom – 1830
When I found this small sampler I knew she needed to be “reimagined”. This piece was stitched in 1830 and the needleworker used wool fibers to create this sweet sampler. Due to the significant loss of thread on the center motif, I decided to take creative liberties and reimagine how this once looked.
I just love how she is reimagined. I decided to use all Needlepoint Inc. Silks and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Stitching with silks is such a joy! I felt this little sampler needed something special.
There is no information about the girl who stitched this quirky design in 1830, but I can only imagine she had quite the personality. Her bold color palette is so creative and full of life! I wonder if she was given discarded thread from an older sibling or if she made these color choices by design?
